St. Joseph's Service Society (SJSS) is the endeavor grown out of the inspiration and enlightenment of Rev. Dr. Sebastian Vadakumpadan, the founder president.

He was ordained a catholic priest in 1968 at Bregenz in Austria  after his theological studies at Urbanianum in Rome. He continued his studies at Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, and obtained Doctrate in Sacred Scripture in 1976. In 1977  he was appointed Secretary of the Bible Commission of Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference and was entrusted with the task of bringing out a new translation of the whole Bible in Malayalam, the vernacular of Kerala. It was published in December 1981. He was the first Director of the Pastoral Centre of the Archdiocese of Ernakulam. As a pastor at Ernakulam, he started a crèche, a school and a printing press with a view to help the poor and backward people.

In 1991 he was sent to Delhi, to assist in the spiritual needs of the Catholics who belong to the Syro-Malbar rite. He saw the plight of the poor, the disabled, the marginalised, and the destitute in the slums and in the peripheries of Delhi. He felt that he had a mission in this field. He believed  that INDIA WILL NOT BE INDEPENDENT IN THE REAL SENSE UNLESS THESE PEOPLE ARE LIBERATED AND BROUGHT TO THE MAIN STREAM OF THE SOCIETY. He sought and got the help of other priests and nuns who are dedicated to the service of the poor, and ready to give their share in the nation-building process. ``San Joe Puram´´ is  the result of this  vision and the common venture.
